This workshop invites participants to engage with two of the papers whose ideas underpin the conference theme of “Opportunities to transform the future of higher education”. The papers have been chosen to stimulate debate on the conference theme, with a particular focus on learning and teaching approaches. Links to these papers are further below but are recommend reading rather than essential for this session.
Maguire et al. reflect on the challenges of the online pivot in 2020 and argue that “the future is blended” (Maguire et al 2020, 21). Their “Vision 2030”sets out the following guiding principles as key tenets of the future of teaching and learning: digital fluency, digital innovation, integrated working, engaging learning, personalised learning, transformed learning spaces, always inclusive, building learning communities, learning infrastructure, and innovative learning. These themes offer a valuable framework for reflection on the future of higher education and workshop participants will be invited to explore how they might use this framework to support the development of their pedagogical approach.
Herodotou et al. outline “a set of innovative pedagogical approaches that have the potential to guide teaching and transform learning” (Herodotou et al. 1). Participants will be invited to reflect on the pedagogies discussed in the paper, as well as to engage with the paper’s framework for identifying innovative pedagogical practices: “(a) relevance to effective educational theories, (b) research evidence about the effectiveness of the proposed pedagogies, (c) relation to the development of twenty-first century skills, (d) innovative aspects of pedagogy, and (e) level of adoption in educational practice” (Herodotou et al. 2019, 1).
Attendees will be invited to read the papers in advance, but a summary of each will be provided by the workshop facilitator to enable focussed discussion. It is hoped that this workshop will provide an informal space for reflection and debate about opportunities to transform the future of higher education, fostering a community engaged with pedagogical innovation at City.
