Since 2019, City has been using the Jisc Digital Experience Insights (DEI) survey (Jisc, n.d.) to understand how students use technology for learning, their digital skills and how we can better support our students. The 2021 DEI survey was delivered when students were primarily studying online and our results (Regan, 2021) found that 70% of responding City students rated the quality of online and digital learning as good or above (based on a 7 point Likert scale from 1 = Worst imaginable to 7 = Best imaginable, where Good = 5). When asked how online and digital learning could be improved, students requested greater interaction with lecturers, more consistent Moodle modules, smaller group sizes for online sessions and more interaction in synchronous sessions through live quizzes. Students were positive about the use of online learning in terms of being able to achieve a better work-life balance and having access to recorded materials; however, they found it difficult to stay motivated and raised concerns about social isolation. The findings also reported that City students are more likely to face issues around not having a suitable device to use for learning, compared to students at other UK HE institutions (Regan, 2021; Jisc, 2021).
Whilst teaching has moved back to campus, for many students there are still online or blended elements to their learning. It is therefore important to continue to evaluate student experiences of technology for learning. This paper will present the results from the 2021/22 iteration of the survey carried out at City during Spring 2022. The session will compare the results with the national benchmark from Jisc and previous iterations of the survey to see how the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted on student digital learning experiences. Finally, the paper will identify some recommendations for better supporting student digital experiences at City and will gather feedback from the audience about these approaches.
