“Fear is at the root of most bad writing.” Stephen King

October’s Writing Group was our busiest yet, with participants from different City departments and also representatives from the Students’ Union.

We continued our focus on editing. This time, using advice from Stephen King, we waged war on the “Atrocity of Adverbs” (Popova, 2013). We read his advice on tightening your writing by avoiding adverbs. In addition, we discussed his views on the importance of “letting go of fear and affectation” (King, 2000) when writing. As always, afterward, we faced our fears and spent time working on our own writing and getting tips on how to use the blogging software.

In the next session, we will look at making your blog post titles snappy in order to hook your readers in.

Join us in ELG05 at 13:00 on Wednesday 8th November.
