Moodle guidance
The Educational Technology Team are continuing to update the Moodle guidance on www.city.ac.uk/edtechhelp/staff. This post highlights a selection of the top tips from our Educational Technology Team so that you know what to watch out for in Moodle 2.6.

Editing a module in full screen mode
Click Turn editing on before you click Enter fullscreen as you lose access to the top toolbar when you are in fullscreen mode!

Increasing the formatting options in the text editor
You can activate the TinyMCE editor (which was used last academic year)

  1. Click on My Profile followed by My Profile Settings and Edit Profile.
  2. In the General section use the Text Editor dropdown menu to select a different text editor. The default option which is already selected corresponds to Atto editor.
  3. From the drop down menu choose TinyMCE HTML Editor.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and click on Update profile.

Forum settings
The default setting for a standard forum is optional subscription meaning that students have to subscribe to the forum in order to see the messages. We recommend changing this setting to auto subscription which automatically subscribes students to the forum and allows them to opt out.

Finding Moodle Reports
Moodle reports have moved and these are now available by clicking on Settings in the Nav bar>>Module Administration>>Reports and select the report you require.

Stopping feedback notifications to students
As those of you who have used Moodle assignments last year are very much aware it was impossible to stop feedback notifications to students once feedback was added to an assignment. This issue has now been rectified. So to stop feedback notifications being sent to students until all the marking and grading is complete follow the guidance on hiding and releasing grades for students. Once you make the grade item visible again a feedback notification will be sent to students. When using Categories and Items to hide grades, the Notify Students option in the individual grading screen should remain as Yes (the default setting) and should not be changed.
