The Careers Consultants team in City’s Careers, Student Development and Outreach service (CSDO) have worked closely with colleagues in the Educational Technology Team to review, redesign and enhance their interactions with students through the use of digital media such as screencasts and webinars. CSDO work with current students and recent graduates to develop our students’ employability, offering careers information and advice, student development and outreach activities, links to employers and mentoring opportunities. In January 2015 members of the Careers Consultants team met with the Multimedia team to look at ways in which they could use video and multimedia to extend the reach and enhance the effectiveness of their interactions with students. Over a year later, the team had become regular guests at the Media and Innovation Learning Lab (the MILL) as they recorded screencasts and hosted a series of webinars for prospective students, current students and alumni.
In this short case study video, Antonia Clark, Estanis Bouza-Ortin and David Gilchrist discuss the approaches they took and the methods they used to create a library of screencasts covering the main topics which they previously delivered in face-to-face presentations, and a series of webinars which they delivered throughout the year. Both are now available to students to watch at any time, who Estanis describes in the video as being time-poor but technology savvy.
All of the facilities, software and support which the Careers Consultants team made use of in their work with the Multimedia team is available to all staff at City: go to our webpage at http://www.city.ac.uk/lead/learning-teaching-support/the-mill to find out more.
