As announced in our previous blog posts, City upgrades to Moodle 4 on 17th July 2023.
This is the latest in our series on the Learning at City blog to introduce you to the new features that will be available in Moodle 4. In this post we highlight the changes to H5P Interactive content.
About H5P Interactive content
H5P allows the creation of interactive and engaging content in Moodle. In the current version of Moodle, H5P was only available by request to a small number of colleagues with pilot role access. With the upgrade to Moodle 4, H5P will now become part of core Moodle and will be available to all staff. New or previously created H5P Interactive content can be added directly from the content bank via the contextual navigation menu.
Once activities have been created in the Content bank, they can be added to Moodle in the same way as other Moodle activities and embedded in Moodle Page and Book resources.
Lots of different content types are available to create. The most popular H5P content types among City’s pilot users are Interactive videos, Accordions and Image hotspots.
You can review an example on the H5P website of an interactive video:
Migrating H5P activities from Moodle 3.9
If you have used H5P in taught modules in Moodle 3.9, your content will be migrated to the Content bank after taught modules from 2022/23 are migrated to Moodle 4 so that they can be used as source modules for rollover. This means that your current H5P activities will be available in the content bank in Moodle 4.
A few H5P content types available in current Moodle were not accessible. We have contacted the relevant module leaders to let them know that these content types will not be available in Moodle 4.
H5P Workshops
If you want to learn how to build some simple interactive resources in H5P, Introduction to H5P workshops are offered by LEaD. Please see the LEaD training calendar for full details, and to sign-up for the in-person workshops.
