Moodle 4 – Improvements to Dashboard

In our recent post, we introduced you to improvements in H5P activities on Moodle 4, which will be rolled out from 17th July 2023.

This is the latest in our series on the Learning at City blog to introduce you to the new look of Moodle 4 and the new features that will be available. In this post we highlight the changes to Dashboard, which will make it easier for you to organise and navigate your modules.

Dashboard

Dashboard is the first page that students and staff will see when they log in to Moodle. By default, it contains five blocks: Advanced Notifications, Timeline, Recently accessed modules, Module overview and Calendar. All blocks can be moved by turning Edit Mode on and selecting the Move icon to the right of each block. Students and staff can customise their Dashboard according to their preferences.

1. Advanced Notifications

This block displays IT notifications about any issues that might impact on your use of Moodle.

2. Timeline

Moodle 4 has been designed to be task-focused. Timeline allows students and staff to more easily keep track of upcoming deadlines across different modules. Moodle assignment due dates will automatically show in student Timelines. Staff Timelines will only display Moodle assignments if a remind me to grade date (optional) has been set in Assignment settings.

Timeline events can be filtered by due date (all, overdue, next 7 days, next 30 days, next 3 months, or next 6 months) and sorted by date or module. There is a search box to allow users to search by activity type or name.

3. Recently accessed modules

This block displays unhidden modules that a user is enrolled on, in order of last access.

4. Module overview

The Module overview block displays all modules a user is enrolled on. Use the Search menu to find a specific module, or use the dropdown menus to sort modules by date (all, academic year, term, starred, and removed from view) and by name or last accessed. The dropdown on the far right allows users to change views of their modules from Card to List or Summary.

5. Calendar

Open the Block drawer on the right of the page to review the Calendar.

6. Customising the Dashboard

Staff can customise their Dashboard by switching Edit Mode on and expanding the red Block Drawer button underneath it to add further blocks. E-Learning Admin and Programme Admin roles, for example, can choose to add the Modules block, which makes it possible to search for modules in a particular category. Staff and students can also restore their Dashboard page to default settings by selecting the grey reset button beneath their profile picture.
