Prepare for the new academic year – Reading Lists Online and Moodle

We’ve got a series of posts to help you prepare for the new academic year on Moodle. This is our tenth post and will cover Reading List Online.

Reading Lists Online links in Moodle

This summer, the Moodle 4 refresh has changed the way that links to Reading Lists Online display in module dashboards.

There are two different ways to link to Reading Lists Online.  Conveniently, once a reading list is has been compiled, a link to the whole list is created automatically and displays under Quick Links as Reading Lists Online. But staff can also display a reading list in sections, and link specific sets of readings to individual weeks or topics. These links now appear on Moodle as Weekly reading.

On modules which use the City course format, a link to Reading Lists Online appears under Quick Links and the Weekly reading displays under Activities on the module dashboard at the top of the page.

In modules that use the Grid format, the links have updated this summer. Previously,  unless staff added the Activities block or linked to sections of their reading list, there was no easily available to link to RLOs for students. Now that the new module dashboard block is automatically added to all Grid format modules, the link to Reading Lists Online will also be automatically available. As with modules using the City format, the link to Reading Lists Online is available under Quick Links, and the links to sections of the reading list appear as Weekly Reading under Activities.

How can I find out more about RLO?

Online Guidance

Reading Lists Online (RLO) is a reading list application supported by Library Services that provides students with quick and easy access to books, e-books, journal articles and websites recommended for their modules. The Library has put together their own guidance on creating and maintaining a reading list. If you’ve never used RLO before you contact your Subject Librarian for support in getting started.

The Education Technology guidance site contains help on adding your reading list in sections to your Moodle module.

Training workshop

The Digital Education team and the Library have joined forces to create a new workshop which will discuss the benefits on Reading Lists Online in terms of availability and accessibility of library resources and how using it can keep you on the right side of copyright legislation. The session will then demonstrate how to create and manage your Reading list. Finally you’ll discover how you can connect your Reading List to your Moodle module and how to provide links to a section of list in relevant sections of your module to provide a more structured experience.

The first workshop will run on Monday 9th September. You can sign up and find details of all the Educational technology workshops on the LEaD training calendar.

Our next post will look at the different roles available for Course Office staff on Moodle.
