Prepare for the new academic year – Support your students to use Moodle

We’ve got a series of posts to help you prepare for the new academic year on Moodle. This is our twelfth post and will cover the support available to your students to use Moodle.

Learning With Moodle Module

The Learning with Moodle module is available to all students and introduces them to all the major activities and resources used on Moodle. As well as how-to screencasts and FAQs, it also provides them with an opportunity to try out different Moodle activities such as taking part in a Quiz or participating in a Forum.  One of its most useful features is the opportunity to practise submitting the most commonly used assessments – Moodle assignments, Turnitin assignments, Video assignments and Quiz. Getting used to the steps involved can take some of the stress out of submitting their first coursework.

We’ve had positive feedback from students on the module with comments such as “makes my studying much easier and I understand more,” and “Everything is well organized.” Some feedback pointed out that it’s a lot of information to digest all at once, so we’ve suggested to students that they come back to the module at key points in their learning journey, such as before their first coursework is due, before exams or when preparing for dissertations or major projects.

You can view the module yourself. Just select the link and you’ll be given the option to auto-enrol as a student. You will then be able to identify the Moodle activities you’re using on your modules and direct your students to concentrate on those parts of the module. If you think we’ve missed out anything, let us know.

Student Educational Technology Guides

Just as staff have comprehensive online guides on how to use Moodle, the Digital Education team also maintains guidance for students. There are step-by-step guides on how to use Moodle, the guides also cover participating in live online lectures, using Lecture Capture, creating multimedia and many more topics.

A link to the student (and staff) EdTech guide is available from the City Links menu on the Moodle toolbar.

Further training and support

The Digital Education team offer training on many aspects of Moodle and other educational technologies. To see details of the full range of workshops and to book, please see the LEaD training calendar.

Our next post continues the theme of getting to know your students and will look at how you can filter the Participants list to see a list of your students and their photos.
