We’ve got a series of posts to help you prepare for the new academic year on Moodle. This is our (lucky) thirteenth post and looks at how you can filter the Participants list on Moodle to view a list of students on your module and how to view them on the photo grid.

Filter the Participants list
One of the changes that came in with Moodle 4 was that most course officers are now directly enrolled onto the modules they have access to. This can mean that when you view the list of participants on a single module, it can be more difficult to see just the students or the lecturers enrolled on your module. Luckily, it’s really easy to use filters to find a group or an individual.
First open the Participants menu from the contextual navigation bar at the top of the module.
The filter at the top left of the Participants page lets you filter by period of activity, enrolment method, group, roles, status and keyword. More than one option may be selected, with the option to filter by Any or All. You might first filter by role and select Student and then narrow down the list by adding another condition such as Groups, so you view only the students in one group.
To see a list of all students, select the option to filter by role, and then select Student. Once you’ve set your conditions select the Apply filters button to view the results. Select the Clear filters button to remove the filters applied.
If you’re looking for one particular student you can use the Keyword filter and add part of their name as the keyword. Alternatively, use the alphabetic filters to narrow by the initial of their first or last names.
Download an email list of students
You can download a class list of everyone enrolled on a module, or you can filter it by role (e.g. all students) or by group membership.
Apply your filters as above, and then at the top of the filtered list, select the checkbox to select all the users.
Scroll to the bottom of the list. From With Selected users use the drop-down list to select Download table data as .xlsx or .csv file. The downloaded file will show four columns – first name, last name, e-mail address and ID number.
View a photo grid of students
You also have the option to view the list of participants on the module with their photographs. Instead of selecting Detailed List, select the Photo Grid tab.
For example, you might want to filter the list to your students and then print out the photo grid to help you get to know your students in face-to-face sessions.
Open the Photo Grid tab and apply the filters in the same way as above. Then select CTRL + P to print the photo grid. Check the layout of the page before you send to print.
