On Monday, 16th December. The Learning Enhancement and Development directorate (LEaD) organised a staff learning and teaching induction event, aimed primarily at new City St. Georges staff involved in learning and teaching but open to anyone who wanted to know about what we do.
The event began with a warm welcome and by Professor Pam Parker, the Director of LEaD, including refreshments and mince pies, followed by an overview of the programmes and services offered by the teams:
- Digital Education: Training in the use of tools and resources to enhance digital literacy and integrate technology into teaching; working collaboratively to develop and evaluate educational technology projects; leading on the design of learning spaces and integrating technology into teaching methods; supporting staff to understand how to create digitally accessible teaching materials.
- Academic Educational Development: Developmental opportunities for staff, including teaching qualifications such as the Introductory Certificate and the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice, and gaining professional recognition through the RISES (Recognising Individual Staff Education Success) programme.
- Academic Skills & English for Academic Purposes Teams: Supporting the development of students’ study skills and academic writing.
- Student Digital Skills: Supporting students to effectively use digital technologies for their learning
A key feature of this event was the interactive element where participants were invited to engage with LEaD staff at different tables, each representing a different area of learning enhancement. This enabled attendees to learn more about how LEaD can best support learning, teaching, and assessment. They were encouraged to ask questions and explore their areas of interest, such as educational research and sharing practice through the annual Learning at City conference and the weekly online Learning Circle in the Learning and Teaching community in Teams.
The chance to sit and speak to LEaD staff individually was a huge benefit for attendees [attendee feedback]
Another highlight was the opportunity to tour The MILL (Media and Innovation Learning Lab), where participants were introduced to the recording facilities and multimedia resources available for enhancing learning. The screening of a video about digital literacies consolidated the importance of supporting students’ development of their digital skills for their learning and future work.
Overall, this community-building event was a valuable opportunity for staff to learn more about LEaD and connect with other educators.
Well organised, friendly and approachable team [attendee feedback]
If you missed it and would like to learn more about LEaD, we’ll be running more induction events in 2025.
We look forward to seeing you there!
