City is updating to Moodle version 3.6 on 15th July 2019. This post is part of our series exploring what’s new in Moodle 3.6. In this post we are looking at the improvements to the module page and improvements to support module design.

Module page improvements
Reduce scrolling on module pages
Our collapsed topics are popular with both staff and students, there are still improvements needed to support navigation on long modules. We are exploring adding a close section at the end of each section to make it easier for users to navigate on long modules.
Mass actions block
We’re hoping we might have finally found a solution to reports of staff ‘losing’ content on large modules when they accidentally drop it in into the wrong section. We’ve been investigating the mass actions block which is looking like a good solution for moving content and other bulk actions that you might need to do to module content when you’re updating it for the new academic year.
Module design improvements
There are a number of improvements to core Moodle to improve the process of designing your modules. These include:
- The ability to copy resources and activities facilitates the creation of similar activities on a module. Duplicated resources are now appended with ‘copy’ so staff can easily distinguish between the original and copy.
- You will be able to enable group messaging when setting up groups to facilitate group collaboration on projects in Moodle.
- You can further support student engagement by recording short audio/video content directly into Moodle’s text editor to personalise and create a sense of enthusiasm for your module content or to introduce a Forum topic.
- You have been using Choices as quick polls to stimulate thinking about a module topic; to allow the class to vote on a direction for the course, or to gauge progress. There is an improved user experience for students in the Choice activity in Moodle 3.6 as students will know in advance how their Choice results will display when they undertake a Choice activity.
- And finally, back to a City development. We’ve managed to reduce the number of clicks required to use activity completion by 5. Activity completion will be switched on in 2019/20 Moodle modules. Staff can set the most relevant activity completion option for activities.
