New module on the MA in Academic Practice: Assessment Design and Feedback

Have you ever wanted to talk about assessment and feedback but are wary of stepping into uncertain territory and potentially moving away from established norms? Assessment is considered critical to students’ learning and as a means of recording their performance, but it is also one of the most complex aspects for practitioners working in higher education.

A picture of a plant and a sign which reads "difficult roads lead to beautiful destinations".

Conscious of the need to surface some of these complexities and respond to the ever-changing higher education assessment landscape, we shall be running a new module on the MA in Academic Practice on the topic of assessment and feedback.

The module is taught across four days and is intended to be an active learning experience. There are opportunities to contribute to the content of the module and experiment with different ways of enacting assessment and feedback.

There is one assessment for this module which comprises three aspects: the creation of an assessment brief and assessment criteria to accompany one or more assessment tasks; and a 2,000-word supporting rationale.

About this module

In this module we shall consider the following:

  • The impact of the wider higher education context on assessment and feedback practices at the institutional and departmental level
  • The different purposes, perceptions, and terminology of assessment
  • How to design inclusive, accessible, and authentic assessment tasks
  • How to design and implement a robust marking and feedback strategy, casting a critical look at the role of formative feedback, exemplars, assessment criteria and rubrics
  • The processes of marking and feedback, moderation, academic judgement, and issues around academic integrity

You can find more information about the module on the City Teaching and Learning hub.

2023 dates: 27th September, 25th October, 15th November, 6th December

All fees are waived for all staff at City (including visiting lecturers) and current City PhD students.
