Poll Everywhere is moving to Single Sign-on in 2024

From January 8th 2024, the way you access your Poll Everywhere account is changing. Rather than having to remember a separate password, you will now be able to use City’s Single Sign-on to access your account.

What does this mean for staff?

How do I log into Poll Everywhere from 8th Jan?

The Poll Everywhere URL remains the same. The only change you’ll notice is that you will be directed to the City SSO page to log in with your City credentials when you access Poll Everywhere. Nothing else will change.

I’ve got a Poll Everywhere account under my City e-mail address, but it’s not part of the City account.

You will not be able to use Single Sign-on to access your account but should use the password you previously set up. Please request an account via the IT service desk and you will be sent an invitation to set up your account on the City licence. This means you won’t be restricted in the number of responses you receive to your polls, and you will also be able to share polls with your colleagues at City.

How do I access Poll Everywhere as a first-time staff user?

If you want a Presenter account, just log into www.polleverywhere.com using the SSO option. The first time you log in, a Poll Everywhere Presenter account will be automatically created using your City credentials.

Please note: A very small number of staff, for example, PhD students who also teach, may still have to request an account via the IT Service Desk.

What are the benefits of Single Sign-On?

  • One fewer password for City users to remember.
  • Secure access for City staff to Poll Everywhere
  • Quicker allocation of Presenter accounts for staff members. Staff new to Poll Everywhere will no longer need to log a request to get a Poll Everywhere Presenter account.
  • Option now available to monitor student progress on polls.
  • Students can use Single Sign-On to log in to Poll Everywhere to keep a record of their responses to polls as a revision resource.
  • Improved staff user management on Poll Everywhere. Staff who leave City will lose access to Poll Everywhere once their City account is deactivated.

What does this mean for my students?

Do my students need to log in to respond to polls in Poll Everywhere?

Your students do not need to log in to Poll Everywhere to participate in polls. However, they might want to log in using Single Sign-On as this will keep a history of their responses to poll questions which is a very useful revision resource. By default, polls are set to be open to everyone rather than restricted to logged-in users. By default, participants are identified by an auto-generated ID rather than their name or email so their responses are anonymous.

Can I require students to log in and still have anonymous polls?

Yes, you can require students to log in to Poll Everywhere with Single Sign On and still enable them to respond anonymously to polls. Advise students in advance if they need to be registered to participate in this poll as they typically respond to polls without logging in. Tell them prior to the session, so they can get logged in.

  1. Expand the Audience restriction & identity setting on the panel to the right of the activity.
  2. Select Restrict to registered participants only. Please note any students not logged in will not be able to participate in the activity once this setting is enabled.
  3. From How do you want to identify participants? select Completely anonymous.

Can I monitor student progress on polls?

With Single Sign-On, you can monitor student progress on polls over a term. You will need to change some settings to do this. Please note that students like to engage with in-class polling solutions as they are anonymous, so it is a low stakes activity. If you plan on monitoring student progress on polls, you will need to discuss this with your students.

  1. Expand the Audience restriction & identity setting on the panel to the right of the activity.
  2. Select Restrict to registered participants only. Please note any students not logged in will not be able to participate in the activity once this setting is enabled.
  3. From How do you want to identify participants? select With their registered name and email.
