We are excited to announce the formation of a new Special Interest Group (SIG) for Digital Accessibility under the Association for Learning Technology (ALT). This initiative has been proposed by Sandra Partington and Sylwia Frankowska-Takhari from our Digital Accessibility team at LEaD, in collaboration with the Learning Technologies team at The University of Nottingham. Together, we aim to foster a vibrant community dedicated to advocating for and discussing all aspects of digital accessibility.
The Digital Accessibility SIG will be formally introduced at the upcoming ALTC24 conference taking place in Manchester, 3-5 September 2024. This group will unite professionals, educators, and technologists who are passionate about creating inclusive and accessible digital spaces. Our goal is to establish best practices for digital accessibility across the higher education sector, providing guidance, tools, and frameworks to help institutions achieve PSBAR compliance and navigate the complexities of accessibility laws. The SIG will continue organising the already successful annual Digital Accessibility conference, add new accessibility-focused events to its calendar, contribute to existing accessibility communities and advocate for better support from third parties, ensuring HE institutions can confidently deliver accessible education.
We are currently seeking candidates to join our leadership team, co-chaired by Julian Tenney (University of Nottingham) and Sylwia Frankowska-Takhari (City St George’s). We especially encourage applications for the roles of Secretary and Officers within the group. As our university holds an institutional membership with ALT, all colleagues are already members and are warmly invited to apply.
If you are passionate about digital accessibility and would like to contribute to this important initiative, please apply by 29th August 2024.
