Moodle 4 – Improvements to Navigation and Editing

In our recent post, we informed you that Moodle 4 will be coming from 17th July 2023.

This is the latest in our series on the Learning at City blog to introduce you to the new look of Moodle 4 and the new features that will be available. In this post we highlight the changes to navigation and editing, which will make it easier for you to navigate around your modules or to rearrange their content.

New side navigation panel

Moodle 4 features a useful new side navigation panel, known as the Module Index, which can be used to access any section or an individual activity or resource on your module. The selected item will open in the main display area and the section or item title will be highlighted in red on the navigation panel. Section headings can be expanded on the navigation panel to display all the activities or resources in that section, or can be collapsed, as required.

Staff can use the move icon in the Module Index to move activities or resources around within or between sections, and to rearrange the sections, making it much easier to organise your module.

Show or hide the module dashboard with one click

The Module Dashboard is a familiar navigation tool, and now it’s much easier to decide whether to display it or not, by clicking the new Show/Hide Module Dashboard button. The button will be available to staff in edit or read mode, and to students.

New Edit mode toggle button

Edit mode can now be turned on and off easily by clicking the Edit mode toggle button in the top right corner of all Moodle pages.  When a module is in edit mode, the toggle button is displayed in red.

New location and visibility for the Settings menu

The Settings menu will now be located above the Moodle module or resource or activity title. It has been simplified and broken down to display its constituent parts. The options that are displayed in the new Settings menu will be customised according to the resource or activity being viewed, allowing staff to open module and resource and activity settings with one click. Any settings or options which are not immediately visible will be available under the More option on the new menu.

General section is now collapsible

The General section at the top of all modules, also known as Section 0, was previously static, meaning it could not be collapsed. Now it can be collapsed to avoid extra scrolling when the content is not needed.

As Moodle 4 is still being worked on, the final features indicated above may look slightly different when it is released in July.
