The presentations by Rosa Benato on her Health Flash podcast and Betty Matthew, on her use of the app Explain Everything to record pre-lecture tutorials on drug calculations, an area the students find difficult (which is something we recommend in our Blended Learning area of our guidance website), as a first step to filpping her classroom. Both academics presented explained what the problem they were trying to solve, the technology they used, how easy or not it was to use and what support they received from LEaD at SHS. They also gave verbal feedback on what their students thought of their approaches.
There were several questions for both presenters from the audience about the time it took them to make these resources, the ease of use of the software needed to create them and the availability of equipment to record these podcasts. The answer to all those questions is we do have enough facility locally (see later in this post) and at the MILL (3rd Floor of University Building, in the new LEaD Offices) Both presenters admitted creating these resources did take time, but that the end result and the time saved in class or a supplementary resource for their students learning was the benefit. Betty Matthew talks more about her experience with Explain Everything below, in our latest LEaDing by Example case study series (see below).
We also covered the Educational Development Projects for 2016/2017, encouraging staff to fill out the Projects Form or speak to one of us and we’ll fill it for you online and reminded staff of the 8th June Learning at City Conference and 23rd June Health’s Got Talent showcase event (12-4pm in the ELG01, Basement, Drysdale Building). We also informed staff that MG08 will soon be available as a ‘Mini-MILL‘ following feedback from School staff that they needed a quiet place to make multimedia resources. The room will have multimedia equipment and will be self-service and bookable. More information via email soon.
We hope those that attended enjoyed this term’s Teaching and Learning Innovator’s event and got some ideas for your teaching materials next academic year, see you in the autumn for the next one! If you’d like to present something you’ve been doing then, please contact us.
