We are really keen to collate recent case studies of modules that have used Teams Sites that help students along with their Moodle Modules.

Here’s why Teams Sites can be a helpful addition to your Moodle Module.

4 benefits to using Teams Sites to help students connect and collaborate in their Learning?

  • Teams Sites can be an interactive platform when you want to encourage your students to collaborate and work with other members of their team on a specific project. And guess what, our students will be using Teams Sites in their working careers so why not give them access to these resources at City.
  • With a team site, typically all or most members can contribute content to the site, and the information is limited to only the members of the team or project and specific stakeholders. This gives our students a ‘safe‘ and ‘inclusive‘ space with other students where they feel connected and engaged.

What is the difference between the Teams site and the SharePoint site?

Teams help foster teamwork and allow for collaboration, chat, calls, meetings, and so much more! SharePoint Online is primarily a document management and intranet platform where you store, collaborate, and share information seamlessly across the organization, and is also part of Microsoft 365.
City’s Digital Education Team recently ran a workshop at the Learning at City conference in June 2023. Our aim was to help disseminate our evaluation which is linked here via this blogpost. We felt positive that the University would like to look at their design of Teams Sites for Teaching and Learning. The main stance was that Teams Sites was an opportunity to rethink the learning design of the module itself. Students also expressed enthusiasm at being able to set up their own private team groups in a safe and inclusive fashion. We are happy to report that our Student Digital Team is offering workshops for students on digital skills and the use of Office 365 tools that are integrated with Team Spaces so please do encourage your students to see these workshops as imperative for their digital footprint and learning journey.

Quotes from Staff and Students on using Teams Sites in their Modules

‘Create Interactive sessions – you have to use it in a way that they want to interact with it because otherwise they can’t be bothered. More activties involving use of student phones or quizzes or being able to show them or get them to go and have a look at something on YouTube, something like being able to make them more engaged, I think worked a lot better.’

”I found teams to be very helpful for that. In terms of organization and we were able to have our own groups’.

‘She would divide us into groups and put this in one group and discuss the question for the tutorial and then she would kind of visit each channel or each group to actually see that we’re all contributing to the question….Then she divided us into each groups again, probably 10 groups, and then we could upload the files there. So then other people from other groups could see our presentation’.

‘Meeting up with my peers, on Teams, is more professional because you don’t want to give your number to some people. So I did use it more than WhatsApp in terms doing group work’.

‘You could be located abroad or you could be in person. Teams Sites are a powerful collaboration tool which can be used for teaching.’

‘You could put documents. It was quite a good place to share.’

‘Some students were plugged in online. We had one student who was in Dubai, one was in Africa. Some students were here.’

‘If you want a collaborative space or you’re going to come back to stuff… or work on it together, teams is the better option. After the class, you could send any questions or any thoughts that we had and it’s more organized, you have your other tabs where you can have the post that you have done or the files that you had shared’.
